Butterfly Jigging for Red Snapper

10/6/2016

During the fall, red snapper can be found in waters ranging from 30 to 200 feet. In these ranges, fish will hold on underwater structure like rock and oyster bars. When most people think of snapper fishing they think of live bait, but that is not always the case.

The Shimano Butterfly Jig is an excellent choice for artificial baits. Vertically jigging, the Butterfly will gather some big bites, but the key is how you work the bait. Most anglers use an aggressive jigging technique for the larger species, but the Butterfly Jig really shines for snapper when it has a subtle jigging motion imparted. Many times, snapper hit the jig when it sits still. And remember, the natural current of the ocean—if you’re fishing these large waters—will give the Butterfly Jig action.
