As summer sets in, bass begin their migrations from the spawning areas to deeper water where they will endure the heat of the summer months and recuperate from the taxing process of the spawn. This usually happens when the water temperature reaches and exceeds 70 degrees, as the shad will also begin that migration. This movement will be from the backs of spawning bays and creeks to any deep water close by and ultimately near the main river channel on river run impoundments. Finding bass during this transition can be very difficult as they will seem to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. There are usually still a few spawning or post-‐spawn fish in the shallows. A good rule of thumb is to focus on where they are going, rather than where they are at, at a given moment. Where they are going will be the staging areas in between the spawning areas and the main lake. As fish are leaving spawning areas they will typically follow a creek channel and stop on staging areas on the way out to the main lake.
