On most lakes during fall crappies spread out, becoming difficult to find. With the weather changing, you can find crappies near the thermocline. Crappies can also be found in the shallows during low-light conditions. Crappies relate to structure and standing timber will point you in the right direction. Since crappies are spread out this time of year, try using a 2- to 3-inch grub or beetlespin to find active schools of fish. When the bite slows down on your artificials, switch to minnows under a float. Being flexible and locating the thermocline will put more crappies in your boat.
