Calm summer days create unique opportunities for saltwater anglers–you have the options of running near shore to fish the surf and jetties, and of fishing mid-reef bays and areas that are usually unreachable due to strong winds. Fishing these surf and mid-bay reefs can be highly productive, as they are havens, providing fish with several comforts during the summer months. They are often adjacent to deeper water, allowing fish to come up shallow and feed, retreating to cooler water later in the day. They often hold bait and provide multiple ambush points for feeding fish. Most importantly, these areas are exposed and provide the highest opportunity for wind and tidal currents. So the next time there is little to no wind, explore areas not normally not accessible–you will expand your knowledge, and may discover a new favorite spot!
